Constructing a Cultural History Russian Jewry at the Turn of the Twentieth Century: Reflections on the Making of a Book
For some years now, Steven Zipperstein has been at work on a cultural history of the Jews of Russia. Beginning this project as a broad, synthetic survey, he decided to construct it around one moment – the Kishinev pogrom of 1903 and its complex aftermath – as a way in which to probe deeply this community’s history and how it came to be understood – and misunderstood- then and later. Zipperstein will reflect on his various methodological choices and on the broader issue of writing history that seeks to speak both to the university world and beyond it.
