Public Lecture with Lord Meghnad Desai
We are delighted to invite you to a special lecture ‘Artificial Intelligence and a changing global workforce and balance of international power’ by Lord Meghnad Desai, proudly co-hosted by Monash Arts and Monash Business School. This lecture explores the anxieties and impacts Robotics and AI have on future employment, taking us beyond cycles of innovation to new solutions.
Our keynote speaker, world renowned economist and member of the British House of Lords, Lord Meghnad Desai will be introduced by Professor Sharon Pickering, Dean, Monash Arts. Following the lecture a Q&A session will be led by Professor Robert Brooks, Interim Dean, Monash Business School.

Lord Meghnad Desai:
Lord Meghnad Desai was born in 1940 in Baroda, India. He obtained his Bachelor and Honors degree in 1958 and Master of Arts in 1960 from the University of Bombay. In 1964 Lord Desai graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Doctorate of Philosophy. He has since worked as an Associate Specialist in the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of California from 1963 to 1965. From 1960 to 2003 Lord Desai joined the Department of Economics at the London School of Economics and has held the positions of lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Reader and Professor. Since 2003, he is Professor Emeritus at the London School of Economics. He is the recipient of several noble awards including the Pravasi Bharatiya Puraskar in January 2004 and the Padma Bhushan by Rashtrapati Shrimati Pratibha Patil in 2008. He received the Jewel of India award from the Indian Merchants Chamber. Lord Desai is an Honorary Fellow of the London School of Economics and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and also received an Honorary Doctorate by Monash University in 2005. He has held a multitude of roles in many of the UK Parliament committees but is currently on the EU Financial Affairs Sub-Committee. He is currently the chairman of the Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum (OMFIF) Advisory Board, and independent membership driven research network that focuses on global policy and investment themes and Chairman of Cape Claims Services. In 2014 Lord Desai took up the mantle of acting as the Chairman of the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust stating that Gandhi was the one person who embodied India across the world. He divides his time between London, Delhi and Goa. Lord Desai has written over 25 books including Applied Econometrics, Marx’s Revenge: The Resurgence of Capitalism and the Death of Statist Socialism, Rethinking Islamism: The Ideology of the New Terror, The Rediscovery of India, Nehru’s Hero: Dilip Kumar in the Life of India.
