Lunchtime Concert Series: Tripataka

Date/Time: Thu 06 Apr / 1:10 pm - 1:50 pm

Location: Monash University, Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, Music Auditorium, Building 68, 55 Scenic Boulevard, Clayton Campus

Tripitaka is Adrian Sherriff (bass trombone, shakuhachi, morsing, voice, percussion) Jonathan Dimond (6-string and fretless electric bass guitars, voice, percussion) and
Adam King (drums, voice).

The trio, formed in 2013, performs original compositions by the band members and unique arrangements of jazz repertoire. Drawing inspiration from the underlying structures of North- and South-Indian Classical music, Afro-cuban, Brazilian and Balinese musics, the band’s sound is rhythmically charged and features improvisatory layerings across cyclical forms.

Composers including Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Steve Coleman and Antonio Carlos Jobim are re-imagined in a landscape where odd metres, rhythmic stratafication and bitonality are juxtaposed to create a rich and stimulating tapestry.
