Free Sound Series Concert – Popular and Jazz Vocal Showcase
This showcase will feature the Popular Voice Ensemble, the Jazz Vocal Ensemble, the Gospel Choir and the Music Theatre Chorus. With four different ensembles, this event is always a full house and a lot of fun!
Directed by Gian Slater, the Jazz Vocal Ensemble explores a range of music from jazz standards to group improvisation and world music repertoire. Within this ensemble, students study vocal techniques, sight singing, harmonizing, blending and improvising. Past performances include concerts at the Melbourne International Jazz festival with John Abercrombie, Alasnoaxis and Jim Black and Australia’s premier vocalist Vince Jones.
The Monash Musical Theatre Chorus, directed by Gerald Marko, performs repertoire from a diverse range of modern and historical musicals including Songs for a New World, Rent, Les Miserables, Matilda and Hamilton. This ensemble builds on techniques and skills developed in first year, with a focus on performance, interpretation, movement, and teamwork.
The Monash Gospel Choir, directed by Charmaine Jones, is a new ensemble specialising in ‘gospel style’ interpretations of both sacred and secular repertoire. This ensemble builds on techniques and skills developed in first year, with a focus on performance, interpretation, movement, and teamwork.
The Monash Popular Voice Ensemble, directed by Charmaine Jones, is 30+ piece vocal group that performs an eclectic mixture of pop, jazz and contemporary repertoire and focuses on showcasing the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music’s talented first year popular voice majors.
