Free Lunchtime Concert – Monash Latin Jazz Ensemble & Monash Brazilian Jazz Ensemble

Under the direction of pianist and composer Sam Keevers, the Monash University Latin Jazz Ensemble focuses on Afro-Cuban jazz repertoire from artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Mario Bauza, Machito, Eddie Palmieri, Poncho Sanchez, Chucho Valdez, Tito Puente and explores the rhythms of Son, Cha Cha Cha, Songo, Salsa and Rumba and associated clave patterns. The ensemble addresses the diverse range of grooves and rhythms that commonly fall under the broad title of Latin music. Featuring horns, rhythm section, percussionists and vocals, the Latin Jazz Ensemble is a dynamic high-energy group!

The Monash University Brazilian Ensemble features Brazil’s musical legacy – the ‘choro’ – as the richest and longest running practice of popular instrumental music in the world today. This music is social by nature and sophisticated in structure, with elements of counterpoint, improvisation and technical virtuosity demonstrated by its practitioners. Happily, this tradition is now being absorbed by many musical cultures around the world including Australia.
