Film Screening: By the Bluest of Seas
Dr Julia Vassilieva presents a rarely seen 1936 Soviet romantic comedy By the Bluest of Seas by Boris Barnet.
Dismissed by Soviet critics By the Bluest of Seas became a cult classic for French New Wave filmmakers and was championed by Jean-Luc Godard in his Histoire(s) du Cinema.
Jonathan Rosenbaum describes By the Bluest of Seas as a masterpiece of the golden age of Soviet cinema and writes that “For a sexy view of collectivism, it’s hard to think of any movie much better than this one.”
Also to be shown: a video essay about By the Bluest of Seas by Kevin Lee with a critical commentary written by Nicole Brenez.
