Public Lecture

The Wandering Jew from Christian Myth to Jewish Self Representation

The “Wandering Jew” arouses in the mind many different associations of the Jews and their history, yet its most striking image is that of a wanderer, who knows no rest and no home. The lecture will deal with the sources of the legend, variations on the theme, and the ways it was reinterpreted, literally and especially visually, in the modern period, by Christians and Jews alike.

PRESENTER:
Professor Richard I. Cohen is the academic director of the Israel Center of Research Excellence (ICore) for the Study of Cultures of Place in the Modern Jewish World. Cohen’s research has focused on the history of Jews in western and central Europe and on the interrelationship between art and society in the modern period.

Venue: H1.16, Ground Floor, Building H, Monash University Caulfield campus.
