Winner of the 2014 EU-Qantas Journalist Award

Winner of the 2014 EU-Qantas Journalist Award is Aaron Patrick, Deputy News Editor at the Australian Financial Review, with a project entitled “European energy policy and opportunities for Australia.”

Aaron’s winning proposal was announced on 18 June at the National Press Club by the European Union’s Ambassador to Australia, H.E. Sem Fabrizi, in the presence of Australia’s Foreign Minister, the Hon Julie Bishop.

Ambassador Fabrizi said “This year’s winner has chosen a subject fundamental to the development of Europe and indeed to many nations around the world. Aaron Patrick will investigate the question of the diversification of Europe’s energy supply, and the implications for Australia”.

“My proposal is to gain a more detailed and nuanced understanding of Europe’s energy challenges and policies” says Aaron Patrick, “and to explore the opportunities for Australia to become an energy supplier to Europe.”

The EU-Qantas Journalist Award is presented by the Delegation of the European Union in Canberra in conjunction with the National Press Club.

Given Qantas’s role as the national carrier we’re pleased to support this award to strengthen understanding between Australia and Europe”, says Olivia Wirth, Group Executive of Brand, Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Qantas Airways Ltd.

Mr Patrick will visit EU institutions in Brussels as well as a number of European capitals later this year.

“The Award was introduced back in 1992 and is one of the initiatives the European Union Delegation undertakes to help create a better understanding in Australia of EU affairs. We aim to give Australian journalists first hand experience in covering European issues.” said Ambassador Fabrizi.
