Monash Roundtables on Independence: Goodbye Spain? Crowds, Ballot boxes and the Prospects for Independence

Three hundred years after Catalonia was fully incorporated into Spain, over 80% of Catalans want the “right to decide” on the question of Catalonia’s independence. The Catalan President, Artur Mas, has announced a “popular consultation” on the question of independence for 9 November this year. The Spanish government strongly opposes it. Where did this growth in support for independence come from? How is it expressed? Is an independent Catalonia possible? This roundtable at Monash University will discuss the political, legal and social implications of the independence movement on Catalonia, Spain and the European Union.

2014 saw the issue of independence and separatism take international centre stage once again.  From Ukraine to the Veneto and from Scotland to Catalunya, no less than in the deserts of Iraq and Syria, methods both democratic and violent have been employed in efforts to alter state borders. This poses moral questions for us in Australia. Should we welcome this as the flowering of cultural and political self-determination? Or is this the unleashing of murderous forces of political instability.
