The members of this unit conduct research primarily in the canon of Western philosophy. Members of the unit have written scholarly works on important figures in this tradition such as Plotinus, Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche and Heidegger; as well as contemporary figures like Deleuze and Rancière.

Members of the unit have also studied and written on some of the major problems and topics that have gripped this field from its very inception: such as the relation of sensation to thought, and founding distinctions in the Western intellectual tradition – such as the distinction between the ‘human’ and the ‘animal’.
