Professor Andrew Milner, from the School of English, Communications and Performance Studies, has been appointed Ludwig Hirschfeld Mack Visiting Professor of Australian Studies for 2013 in the Institut für Englische Philologie at the Freie Universität Berlin. The chair is co-funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Australian Embassy in Berlin and is named in memory of Ludwig Hirschfeld Mack (1893-1965), the German-Australian artist and one time member of the Bauhaus, who fled Germany to England in 1936 and was subsequently deported to Australia, as one of the famous ‘Dunera Boys’, in 1940.

In Berlin, Professor Milner will teach an MA course on ‘Utopia and Dystopia in Australian Fiction’ and a BA course on ‘Speculative Fiction in Australian Literature and Film’ and will also give a public lecture on ‘Climate Change in Australian Science Fiction’ at the Australian Embassy. Professor Milner’s eleventh book, Locating Science Fiction, is currently in press with Liverpool University Press.
