The asylum impasse: Professor Sharon Pickering & Dr Leanne Weber’s contributions to the national discussion

Sharon Pickering and Leanne Weber, both experts in border crossing research and the two authors of the 2011 publication Globalisation and Borders: Deaths at the Global Frontier have been contributing to recent media discussions about the limits of the debate in the federal parliament and the failure to reach a policy decision regarding asylum seekers.

Sharon’s article in The Conversation on 28th June, ‘Six issues missing from the asylum seeker debate’ has captured the attention of many around the nation. The article has been reported and published in a range of locations including SBS and ABC online, and Sharon has contributed interviews to a range of national and state broadcasts (including ABC Brisbane and Triple J’s Hack).

Leanne has published both in The ConversationDon’t blame people smugglers – bad policy leads to deaths at sea, and in New Matilda, Why asylum seekers come by boat.
